Is It Worth Keeping Your LLC for the Rest of 2026?

A mid-year cost check for idle LLCs: what you will still pay from July to December 2026 if you keep it open, and when closing now is the smarter move.

Quick Answer

If your LLC is not making money or serving a real purpose, it is usually not worth keeping for the rest of 2026. Every remaining month adds registered agent fees, the annual report, and in some states an $800 franchise tax. Closing now stops those costs. Keep it only if you plan to use it again soon.

We are halfway through 2026, which makes this a good time to ask a simple question about an LLC you are not really using: is it worth keeping for the rest of the year? If it is not making money or holding anything important, the honest answer is usually no. Every month you keep it open adds cost, and closing now stops the meter.

What Does It Cost to Keep an LLC Open in 2026?

An LLC does not have to earn a dollar to cost you money. Just staying registered carries recurring charges that show up whether or not the business is active:

  • Registered agent: $100 to $300 per year for a commercial agent, required in most states for as long as the LLC exists.
  • Annual report or franchise fee: anywhere from $0 to a few hundred dollars, depending on the state.
  • Franchise or privilege tax: some states charge this no matter your income. California is the headline example at an $800 minimum every year.
  • Bookkeeping and filing time: even a dormant LLC may still owe a federal return, which costs money or hours to prepare.

None of these are huge on their own. The problem is that they repeat every single year, for a company that may be doing nothing.

How Much Will You Spend Keeping It Open for the Rest of 2026?

Here is the mid-year math. These are the costs you are still on the hook for from July through December if you leave the LLC open, using rough mid-range numbers.

CostRest of 2026
Registered agent (renewal)$100 to $300
Annual report or state fee$0 to $300
Franchise tax (states like California)up to $800
Final or ongoing tax prep$0 to $400

For a plain LLC in a low-fee state, that might be $150 for the rest of the year. In California or another high-tax state, it can climb well past $1,000. And that is just the back half of 2026. Leave it open into 2027 and the same charges start over.

When Is It Worth Keeping Your LLC?

Keeping it can absolutely make sense. Hold on to the LLC if any of these are true:

  • You expect to use it again within the next few months (a paused project, a seasonal business, a deal in progress).
  • It holds an asset you are not ready to move, like property, a bank account with a real balance, or contracts still in force.
  • It has brand value or a history you would lose by starting over.

If the LLC is a real tool you will pick back up soon, the annual cost is just the price of keeping the door open.

When Should You Close It Instead?

Close it if the LLC is simply idle: no income, no assets worth protecting, no concrete plan to use it. Paying another six months of fees to keep an empty company registered is money spent for nothing. The longer you wait, the more you pay, and the more likely you are to miss a filing and pick up a penalty on top of the base fees.

Dissolving now is a one-time cost. In most states the state filing fee is modest, and you can see the full breakdown in our guide to LLC dissolution costs.

What If You Need an LLC Again Later?

This is the fear that keeps a lot of idle LLCs alive: what if I need it next year? The reality is that forming a new LLC is fast and inexpensive, and often cheaper than a year of maintenance fees on a company you are not using. If your plans are genuinely on hold with a real restart date, keep it. If "later" means "someday, maybe," you are better off closing now and forming fresh when you actually need it.
