An EIN is a nine-digit federal tax identification number issued by the IRS. It is tied to the legal entity, not to the owner. Once assigned, the number exists in IRS records forever, even after the business closes. The IRS does not reassign EINs to other businesses.
Does the IRS Cancel Your EIN Automatically?

For a single-member LLC taxed as a sole proprietorship, you report business income on Schedule C of your personal Form 1040. On the final year's Schedule C, indicate it is the last return for the business. For a multi-member LLC taxed as a partnership, file Form 1065 and check the "Final return" box in Section G. If your LLC had employees, you must also file a final Form 941 (quarterly payroll taxes), a final Form 940 (annual FUTA tax), and issue W-2s to employees by January 31 of the following year.

Can You Transfer or Reuse an EIN for a New Business?

This is true even if the new business has the same name, same owner, and same industry as the previous entity.
Never give your EIN to someone who claims they can "take over" your LLC. Dissolved entities have no value to transfer, and sharing an EIN for a closed business exposes you to identity theft and tax fraud risk.
What Happens If You Leave the EIN Open After Dissolution?
If you dissolve your LLC with the state but never file a final federal return or notify the IRS, the IRS will continue to expect annual returns for that EIN. After several years of missing returns, the IRS may flag the account as non-compliant, which can trigger notices, penalties, and in some cases a federal tax lien.

Banks require a state dissolution certificate before closing a business account. Once you have the certificate from your state, present it to the bank along with a request to close the account and cut a final check for the remaining balance.
